Trans Metro Express

There’s a bunch of us waiting at Nørreport, cans in hands, mumbling passionately with a slight sense of secrecy. On a normal Tuesday, you might think this would be because FCK are playing the Champions League qualifiers (and will subsequently get their behinds handed to them), but that is not why. As the next Metro cart approaches and a distant rumble grows increasingly audible, there is no doubt that the Nørreport crowd is here to join this year’s Trans Metro Express. The few casual commuters look puzzled as a jam-packed train, filled to the brim with hundreds of ravers, picks us up. To be fair, squeezing in any more people is a challenge in itself, but once inside, nobody cares about the steam on the windows. Read More »

Thursday updates

So far it has been a pretty good week and luckily it’s far from over. Today we end this year’s workshops and master classes with an impressive team of international superstars and we also have a vast number of events at some pretty exciting venues. We can’t wait for it all to begin and we hope you can’t neither. So hurry out in the streets and remember as usual to keep a watch out for our blogteam and pictures of yesterday’s events.

Workshops and master classes
As mentioned before this is the last day to stop by our workshops and master classes. Today’s music production workshops will be in the company of Tony Nwachukwu, Onra and Ras G, only to be followed by a Q/A-session together with master classes-closers and legendary producers Thomas Fehlmann, Daniel Miller and Mutamassik.

Events
Okay, where should we start? Today we are presenting Mad Professor featuring Joe Ariwa at the Copenhagen Skatepark, hosting a crazy party inside the abyss of Amager’s incineration plant, celebrating All City Records with Onra and Om Unit at the second of two showcase in Christianshavns Beboerhus, and last but not least taking the S-train to Albertslund together with a bunch of the newest Danish grime talents. This is undoubtedly bound to be a great day!

Still not tired after Tuesday’s event marathon? Then start getting ready for another series of great events. Today we have master classes, workshops, seminars and musical experiences lined up for you at Nørrebro and Christianshavn with a couple of big international artists. So see you out on the streets and remember to keep a watch out for today’s photos and blog feature her on the site.

Just like yesterday Tony Nwachukwu will host a four hour music production workshop at Culture Box together with All City Record’s Mike Slott and Ras G. Later in the evening legendary producers Mad Professor and DJ Rupture will host this year’s most dub dominated master class, while music editor of Danish newspaper Ralf Christensen holds a seminar about the history of electronic music.

Events
The first event of the day starts at 3pm when Rewind takes over Folkets Park with a line-up consisting of some of Copenhagen’s most talented new bass producers. At 7.30 pm and not far from there, Henrik Marstal invites us all inside the Brorson Church where Hannah Schneider and Henrik himself will rework some of Gustav Mahler’s classic works. The last event of the day starts at 9pm, when Mike Slott and Ras G moves to Christianshavns Beboerhus at the first of two All City showcases.

Strøm Master Class

’They have free Red Bull!’ were the first words my friend said, when we met up at Culture Box yesterday. And sure enough, there was plenty of free caffeine for everybody once inside. While a solid energy boost should never be neglected, I was more interested in RBMA’s general involvement with the event. As far as I recall, we have already had a few master classes around Copenhagen hosted by the caffeine giant, but this year’s Strøm festival hosts well over a handful of master classes and workshops that borrow the traditional RBMA structure while adding a handful of both local and international acts.

Yesterday’s event saw Bjørn Svin, Troels Abrahamsen, and Tomas Barfod elaborating on everything from production techniques to distribution. The raw surroundings at Culture Box had received the cozy treatment with pillows and bean bag chairs ready to be occupied, and they did indeed get occupied when an impressive number of people showed up. The workshop starts at 12 noon and the master class at 4 pm.

Today we kick off the Strøm events in Nørrebroparken in the company of Mutamassik, Morgan Craft, DJ Rupture and Bjørn Svin. Later Trans Metro Express will take you on the year’s best trip in the Copenhagen Metro, with some of the finest new Danish electronic artists. Strøm recommendations by Regnsky

It’s difficult not to get hit by a bad case of ’festival ambivalence’ during the summer season. Throughout June, July and August, Copenhagen and nearby cities offers its inhabitants explorations such as Distortion, Roskilde Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Raw and Stella Polaris. And even though every one of these events has their own theme and environment, spreading music is the common denominator. And so, in the middle of August, Strøm Festival opens as a culminating treat, not just for the people of Copenhagen, but also for visitors from neighbour countries, coming to Denmark especially for this festival.

I’m drawing the latter conclusion based on a two weeks old experience I had in my favourite record store. Here, the shelves containing numerous of vinyl records are usually messed up as in ’uncategorized’, but this day, one of the employees re-stocked every single record alphabetically or by record label. ”It’s because of Strøm Festival”, he told me. ”Every year during Strøm, the shop has a lot of visitors, mainly foreigners wanting to buy records from the artists they’ve heard at one of Strøm events”.
